General Motors
General Motors has remained one of the biggest automakers in the world. Founded in 1908 by William C. Durant, it has stood the test of time and is considered the largest car maker in the US. They design, manufacture, market, and distribute car brands like Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac. Headquartered in Detroit, Michigan since its foundation, it has 396 facilities all over the globe, powered by over 180,000 employees. They distribute their cars worldwide except for 9 countries. Ford Motor Company
Henry Ford founded the Ford Motor Company in 1903. Headquartered in Detroit, Michigan, it has over 200,000 people under its employ. Chrysler
Also known as FCA US LLC, Chrysler rounds up the three biggest carmakers in the US. It manufactures and distributes car brands like Dodge, Jeep, and Ram. Founded by Walter Percy Chrysler in 1925, it is headquartered in Detroit, Michigan. The company has a colorful past, with mergers and acquisitions and takeovers. Walter Chrysler bought what remained of the Maxwell Motor Company and turned it into what is now known as Chrysler. It has over 25 facilities in Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, and the US combined. It has over 75,000 employees worldwide. In 2014, they merged with Fiat SpA, thus becoming Fiat Chrysler Automobiles or FCA. Like any multinational company, it withstood the storms over the years. It was close to bankruptcy in the 1970s. A government loan of USD 1.5 billion saved the company from bankruptcy. Then CEO Lee Iacocca was able to turn the company around to profitability in the 1980s.
